Fula, also known as Fulani or Fulah, is a Senegambian language spoken in West Africa. It is the language of the Fulani people, who are found in many countries, including Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Niger and Cameroon. There are approximately 38 million speakers of Fulani, making it the eleventh most widely spoken African language.
Fula is a member of the Niger-Congo family of languages, and is closely related to other West African languages like Wolof and Serer. It is written with a Latin alphabet, and has a rich oral tradition. Fulani music is particularly well-known, and is often played on the traditional string instrument, the kora.
Fula is a tonal language, with three tones – high, low and falling. This can make it challenging for speakers of non-tonal languages to learn. However, once mastered, it can be a beautiful and expressive language.
