Niger

Niger is a landlocked country in Western Africa, named after the Niger River. It is bordered by Libya to the northeast, Chad to the east, Nigeria to the south, Benin to the southwest, Burkina Faso to the northwest, and Mali to the west. Niger covers a land area of almost 1.3 million square kilometers, making it the largest country in West Africa. The country's predominantly Islamic population of over 21 million is mostly clustered in the far south and west of the country. The capital city is Niamey, located in the far-west corner of Niger. Niger is a largely arid and poor country, with an economy based largely on subsistence agriculture and livestock raising. The majority of the population lives in rural areas, and poverty is widespread. Niger is also home to a large nomadic population, with many Tuareg and Fulani people living a traditional pastoral lifestyle in the north of the country. The Sahel region, of which Niger is a part, has been beset by drought and desertification for many years, and the country is frequently affected by food shortages. Niger also has a number of environmental problems, including soil erosion, deforestation, and overgrazing. The government of Niger has made some efforts to address the country's problems, but these have been hampered by corruption and by the country's lack of resources. In recent years, Niger has been working to improve its infrastructure and to attract foreign investment, in hopes of boosting the country's economy.
