Mauritania is a country located in the Maghreb region of North Africa. The country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. With an area of around 1,030,700 square kilometres (402,000 sq mi), Mauritania is the world's twenty-ninth largest country and is slightly larger than the US state of Oklahoma.
Mauritania has a population of around 4.3 million people, of which approximately 60% are Moorish Arabs, 30% are Black Africans, and 10% are Berber and other minorities. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast, with a population of around 1.7 million people.
Mauritania is a Muslim country, with Islam as the state religion. Arabic and French are the country's official languages.
Mauritania's economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, and livestock, although iron ore and copper mining are also significant. The country is a member of the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
