ghainese Shanghainese is a language spoken in the Chinese city of Shanghai and its surrounding areas. It is a member of the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages, which includes Chinese, Tibetan, and several other languages spoken in China. Shanghainese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin Chinese, the official language of China, but is closely related to other Wu Chinese languages such as Suzhou dialect and Wenzhounese. Shanghainese is a tonal language with four tones: level (unmarked), rising, departing, and Entering. It has a subject-prominent SVO word order and is known for its use of particles and honorifics. The Shanghainese dialect is also notable for its use of loanwords from English, French, and other languages. The Shanghainese dialect is spoken by about 14 million people in the Shanghai metropolitan area. It is also one of the most commonly used Chinese dialects in overseas Chinese communities, particularly in North America and Europe. In recent years, Shanghainese has been experiencing a decline in use, due in part to the increasing use of Mandarin Chinese in the city of Shanghai.
