The Hupa people are a Native American tribe who live in present-day California. The Hupa language is a member of the Athabascan family of languages. It is closely related to the Mattole dialect of the Wailaki language. The Hupa language is spoken by about 500 people. It is endangered, as few young people are learning it. The Hupa people have worked to revive their language, and there are now Hupa language classes offered in some schools. The Hupa language is written in the Latin alphabet. There is also a Hupa alphabet, which was developed in the early 20th century. The Hupa alphabet is not widely used, but it is sometimes used for ceremonial purposes.
