Mingrelian

Mingrelian is a Kartvelian language spoken in Mingrelia, in the west of Georgia. It has about 500,000 speakers, and is written in a Georgian alphabet. Mingrelian has no official status, but is spoken by a minority of the Mingrelian population. Mingrelian is a polysynthetic language, with a complex system of suffixes andprefixes. It is agglutinative, like most Kartvelian languages. Mingrelian has been written in a Georgian alphabet since the 18th century, and in a Latin alphabet since the 1920s. The Mingrelian language is endangered, as its speakers are often forced to use Georgian or Russian in daily life. However, there are some efforts to revive the language, including Mingrelian-language schools and radio programs.
