Konkani

Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Konkan region of India. It is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India with official language status in the state of Goa. Konkani is also spoken in the union territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It is a minority language in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. There are 2.5 million native speakers of Konkani. Konkani is a member of the southern Indo-Aryan language group. It is closely related to Marathi and is believed to have split off from Marathi around the 10th century. Konkani is written in the Devanagari script. It has also been written in the Roman script and in the Kannada script. Konkani has a rich literary tradition. It is one of the oldest languages in India with a literary tradition dating back to the 13th century. Konkani has been known by a number of names over the centuries, including Canarim, Concanim, Gomantaki and Lingua Canarim. The first Konkani grammar was written by Damodar Gujarati in 1552. The first Konkani dictionary was compiled by Pundalik Naik in 1640. The first Konkani newspaper, The Navayug, was published in 1843. Konkani has a number of dialects, the most important of which are Bardeshi, Goan Konkani, and Kannada Konkani. Bardeshi is spoken in the Bardez taluka of Goa. Goan Konkani is spoken in the Goa taluka of Goa. Kannada Konkani is spoken in the Karnataka districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi. Konkani is an official language in the union territory of Goa. It is also one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. Konkani is taught in primary and secondary schools in Goa. Konkani is also used in the mass media in Goa.
