Geez is an ancient language that is still spoken by some people in Ethiopia. It is believed to be a direct descendant of an even older language, called Ge'ez. Ge'ez is no longer spoken, but it is still used as the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Geez is a Semitic language, related to Hebrew, Arabic, and Amharic. It is written in a unique alphabet of 26 letters, all of which are consonants. There are no vowels written in Geez, but they are implied by the consonants. Geez has been in decline for centuries, but there has been a recent resurgence in interest in the language. In 2015, the Ethiopian government announced that it would be teaching Geez in schools. Geez is a beautiful and complex language, with a rich history. It is a shame that it is in decline, but there is hope that it will be revived and continue to be spoken for generations to come.
