Alabama

Alabama, also known as Alibamu or Alabam, is a Muskogean language spoken by the Alabama people, primarily in southern Alabama. It is closely related to the Choctaw and Chickasaw languages. Alabama is a member of the Western Muskogean subfamily of languages, which also includes Chickasaw and Choctaw. The three languages are quite similar, with Alabama being the most divergent. Linguists believe that the three languages share a common ancestor, which was spoken by the people who inhabited what is now Mississippi and Alabama prior to the arrival of Europeans in the Americas. The Alabama language is spoken by an estimated 2,000 people, most of whom live in southern Alabama. It is considered to be endangered, as few children are learning it as their first language. Efforts are underway to revive the language, and there are a number of resources available for those who wish to learn it.
