Zairean Zaire (1971–1993)

ZRZ is the native currency of the Republic of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous island state off the coast of Tanzania. It is subdivided into 100 cents and is pegged to the Tanzanian shilling at a rate of 1 ZRZ = 100 TZS. The ZRZ was introduced in 1985, replacing the East African shilling. Coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 cents, and 1 ZRZ, while banknotes are available in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 ZRZ. The Central Bank of Zanzibar is responsible for issuing the currency. The ZRZ is not widely used outside of Zanzibar, and as such, it can be difficult to exchange for other currencies. However, it can be exchanged for Tanzanian shillings at most banks and money changers on the island.
