Seychellois Rupee

The currency of the Seychelles is the Seychelles rupee. The rupee is subdivided into 100 cents. The Seychelles pound was the currency of Seychelles until 1914, when it was replaced by the rupee. The rupee was decimalized in 1969. In 1974, the Seychelles government began issuing paper money, denominated in rupees and cents. The first coins were introduced in 1976, also denominated in rupees and cents. In 1979, cupro-nickel 10 and 25 cent coins were introduced, followed by cupro-nickel 5 rupee coins in 1980. These were followed by bi-metallic 5 and 10 rupee coins in 1996 and 1997 respectively. A bi-metallic 20 rupee coin was introduced in 1998, followed by a cupro-nickel 50 rupee coin in 1999. In 2008, the Central Bank of Seychelles issued a revised series of coins, with reduced size and weight for all denominations except the 1 and 2 rupees. The new 5 rupee coin is bimetallic, while the others are cupro-nickel. All coins feature the national crest on the obverse and a turtle on the reverse. The Seychelles rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at a rate of 1 Seychelles rupee = 0.065 Indian rupee.
