Tangut

The Tangut script, also known as the "Tangraphic" or "Hsi Hsia" script, was used for writing the now-extinct Tangut language of the Western Xia Empire. The script was created during the 12th century, and was in use until the empire's demise in 1227. The Tangut script is a logographic system, with each character representing a word or concept. There are around 4,000 characters in the script, which were written on paper or carved into wood or stone. The script was used primarily for administrative and religious texts, as well as for poetry and literature. A small number of Tangut texts have survived to the present day, including a Buddhist sutra and a dictionary. The Tangut script is of great interest to scholars, as it represents a rare example of a script used for a non-Chinese language. The script has been the subject of intense research, and a number of books and articles have been written about it.
