Odia is a language spoken in the Indian state of Odisha. It is also spoken in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. Odia is the official language of Odisha and is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. The Odia script is derived from the Brahmi script and is one of the four surviving ancient scripts of India. The earliest known inscription in the Odia language dates back to the 10th century CE. The Odia language is a member of the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. It is closely related to Bengali and Assamese. Odia has a rich literary tradition. The first Odia book was published in 1866. The first Odia newspaper was launched in 1876. Odia is primarily a spoken language. However, there is a growing body of literature in Odia. This includes poetry, novels, short stories, and plays. Odia is also spoken by a large number of people outside Odisha. This includes migrant workers from Odisha who have moved to other parts of India in search of work. There is also a significant number of Odia speakers in the Persian Gulf region, especially in the United Arab Emirates.
