Tajikistani Somoni

The Tajikistani Somoni is the currency of Tajikistan. It was introduced on October 10, 2000, replacing the Russian ruble. The somoni is named after an ancient coin minted in the region. It is divided into 100 diram. The somoni has been relatively stable since its introduction. It is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a rate of 8.00 somoni to 1 US dollar. The National Bank of Tajikistan is responsible for issuing the currency. Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with a population of about 8.7 million. The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture and remittances from Tajikistanis working abroad. The country also has significant reserves of gold and other minerals. The Tajikistani Somoni is not a widely used currency outside of Tajikistan. However, it can be exchanged for other currencies at banks and currency exchange offices in the country.
