Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia with an area of 143,100 square kilometers. It is bordered by Kyrgyzstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Turkmenistan to the southwest, Afghanistan to the south, and China to the east. The territory of Tajikistan was part of the Persian Empire for centuries. In the late nineteenth century, it was conquered by the Russian Empire and became a Soviet republic in 1929. Tajikistan became an independent state in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Tajikistan is a mountainous country with more than 90 percent of its territory covered by mountains. The highest point is Mount Ismail Samani at 7,495 meters, which is also the highest point in the former Soviet Union. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters. The population of Tajikistan is 8.3 million, the majority of which are Tajik people. Other ethnic groups include Uzbeks, Russians, Kyrgyz, and Tajiks. The capital and largest city is Dushanbe. Tajik is the official language, Russian is also widely spoken. The economy of Tajikistan is based on agriculture, aluminum production, and hydroelectric power. The country is also rich in minerals, including gold, uranium, and tungsten. Tajikistan is a member of the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the Eurasian Economic Union.
