Surinamese Dollar

The Surinamese dollar (SRD) is the official currency of Suriname. It is subdivided into 100 cents. The earliest currency used in Suriname was the guilder, first introduced in 1683. The Surinamese dollar replaced the guilder in 1975 and was at parity with the United States dollar. The dollar has been the official currency of Suriname since 2004. The Surinamese dollar is issued by the Central Bank of Suriname (CBS). The CBS is also responsible for the supervision of the banking sector and the regulation of the payment system in Suriname. The bank has a monopoly on the issuance of banknotes and coins in Suriname. The dollar is pegged to the United States dollar at a rate of 1:1. The Surinamese dollar is not traded on international currency markets. The dollar is used in Suriname for all transactions, both private and public.
