Macedonian Denar

Macedonia's currency is the denar (pl. denari), which was introduced in May 1992. The denar is divided into 100 stotinki. The first denar coins were minted in 1992 in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinki, and 1 denar. In 1993, 2, 5 and 10 denar coins were introduced, followed by 20 and 50 denar coins in 1996. In 1997, coins for 1, 2 and 5 denari were minted in a new design. A 50 stotinki coin was minted in 1998. The denar is pegged to the euro at a rate of 60 denari = 1 euro. Macedonia's first banknotes were introduced in 1992 in denominations of 10, 20 and 50 denari. In 1993, 100, 500 and 1000 denari notes were added, followed by 5000 denari notes in 1995 and 10,000 denari notes in 1996. In 1997, 500 denari notes were replaced by coins. In 1998, a new series of banknotes was introduced in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 denari. These notes were designed by a Macedonian artist and feature a variety of historical and cultural scenes from Macedonia. The current series of banknotes was introduced in 2002 in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 denari. These notes are also designed by a Macedonian artist and feature a variety of historical and cultural scenes from Macedonia.
