The Botswana Pula is the currency of Botswana. It is subdivided into 100 thebe. The Pula means "rain" in the Setswana language, because rain is very scarce in Botswana — hence the scarcity value of water. Thebe means "shield", representing defense. The names were chosen in 1976.
