Afghanistan's currency is the afghani (AFN). The afghani is subdivided into 100 puls, although coins of only 25 and 50 puls are currently in circulation. The first afghani was introduced in 1925. The afghani replaced the Afghan rupee in 1932. The afghani was pegged to the British pound at a rate of 1 afghani = 0.384429 British pounds. This was changed to 1 afghani = 2.20371 German marks in 1936. The afghani was pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 1 afghani = 0.423077 dollars. The afghani was replaced by the Afghan new afghani in 2003, at a rate of 1 new afghani = 100 old afghanis. The new afghani is pegged to the US dollar at a rate of 1 new afghani = 0.69 dollars.
