Montserrat is a small island in the Caribbean Sea. It is a British Overseas Territory and is part of the Lesser Antilles. The island is about 16 km long and 11 km wide. The capital city is Brades. The official language is English. The island was formed by volcanic activity and is mostly mountainous. The highest point is Chances Peak, which is 915 m high. The island is mostly covered in tropical forest. The island was inhabited by the native Arawak and Carib peoples before being colonised by the British in 1632. The population of the island is about 5,000. The economy is mainly based on tourism and agriculture. The island is famous for its black sand beaches and its clear waters. It is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. The island was severely affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The hurricane caused widespread damage and destruction. The island is currently in the process of recovery.
