Guatemala is a country located in Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Belize and the Caribbean to the northeast, Honduras to the east, El Salvador to the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the south. With an area of 42,042 square kilometers, Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America, with a population of 17.2 million. The country is a republic with a presidential system. The capital and largest city is Guatemala City. Other major urban areas include Quetzaltenango, Escuintla, and Ciudad Vieja. Guatemala is a culturally rich country with a diverse history. In the late 20th century, Guatemala experienced a period of transition as it moved from a military dictatorship to a democratically-elected government.
