Greece is bordered by the Aegean Sea to the east, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The country consists of a mainland and two large islands, Crete and Euboea. Greece has a long history, dating back to the Bronze Age. The country was once part of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire. Greece was later occupied by the Ottoman Empire for centuries. The Greek War of Independence in 1821 led to the country's independence. Greece is a parliamentary republic and the official language is Greek. The currency is the euro. Tourism is a major industry in Greece. The country is home to numerous historical and archaeological sites, as well as beautiful beaches. The most popular tourist destinations include Athens, the capital, and the islands of Crete and Santorini. Greece is a member of the European Union and NATO. The country is also a founding member of the United Nations.
