Colombia

Colombia is a country located in the northwestern corner of South America. It is bordered by Panama to the north, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the south, and Ecuador and Peru to the west. Colombia is the 26th largest country in the world by area and the 4th largest in South America. Colombia is a constitutional republic with a presidential system of government. The president of Colombia is the head of state and the head of government. The president is elected by the people for a four-year term and can be re-elected for a second term. The vice president is also elected by the people and serves as the head of the Senate. The judicial branch of the government is headed by the Supreme Court of Justice, which is composed of 21 members elected by the Senate for eight-year terms. Colombia is a member of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Andean Community of Nations. The economy of Colombia is the fourth largest in South America and is based on the export of petroleum, coal, coffee, and agricultural products. The GDP per capita was estimated at $13,100 in 2017. The population of Colombia is 49,737,374 (2017 estimate) and the country has a population density of 52 people per square kilometer. The majority of the population is of mixed European and Amerindian ancestry (58%), with minorities of European descent (20%), Afro-Colombian (14%), and Amerindian (4%). Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion (76%), with Protestantism (15%), and other religions (9%) also practiced. The official language of Colombia is Spanish, but there are also many indigenous languages spoken, including Quechua, Aymara, and Guaraní.
