Costa Rica is a country located in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, and Ecuador to the south. Costa Rica covers an area of 51,100 square kilometers (19,700 square miles) and has a population of around 4.9 million. The capital and largest city is San José. The country is known for its stable democracy, environmentalism, and ecotourism. It is also the only Central American country to have never experienced a military coup or dictatorship. Costa Rica is a popular destination for tourists, with its beaches, rainforests, and volcanoes. The country has a tropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius (64 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit). The seasons are determined by the amount of rainfall, with the rainy season lasting from May to November and the dry season from December to April. Costa Rica is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including the resplendent quetzal, jaguar, and tapir. It is also a part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, which aims to protect the wildlife and ecosystems of the region. Costa Rica is a founding member of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Central American Integration System. It is also a member of the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.
