Ascension Island is a volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, around 1,000 miles from the coast of Africa and around 1,400 miles from the coast of South America. It is one of the few places in the world where you can find green turtles, and is also home to a large number of bird species. The island has a tropical climate, with average temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius.
The island was first discovered by the Portuguese in 1501, but it was the British who first settled there, in 1815. The island was used as a stopover point for ships travelling to and from the East Indies, and as a result, a number of different cultures have left their mark on the island. These include British, American, Indian, Chinese, African and Brazilian.
Today, the island is home to around 800 people, most of whom work for the British government or the US military. There is also a small tourist industry, and a number of people come to the island to enjoy its unspoilt beaches and wildlife.
