Rotuman

The Rotuman language is an Austronesian language spoken on the island of Rotuma, an island in the Pacific nation of Fiji. The language is also spoken by Rotuman diaspora communities in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. The Rotuman language is one of the few Austronesian languages that is not written with a Latin-based alphabet. Instead, it is written with a modified form of the Rotuman alphabet, which was developed by missionaries in the 19th century. The Rotuman language is endangered, with only about 4,000 speakers remaining. However, there is some effort being made to revive the language, including the creation of a Rotuman language radio station and the development of teaching materials.
