The Jola-Fonyi languages are a group of closely related languages spoken in Senegal, the Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. They are part of the Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo family.
The Jola-Fonyi languages are:
Fula: Also known as Fulani or Fulbe, this is the largest language in the group, with over 3 million speakers. It is spoken in Senegal, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, and Mauritania.
Diola: Also known as Jola, this language has over 1 million speakers. It is spoken in Senegal and the Gambia.
Casamance Creole: Also known as Ziguinchor Creole, this is a creole language based on Portuguese. It is spoken in the Casamance region of Senegal.
Bijago: This language has over 200,000 speakers and is spoken in Guinea-Bissau.
All of the Jola-Fonyi languages are endangered, due to the dominance of French and Portuguese in the region.
