Betawi

Betawi (also spelled Batawi) is an Austronesian language spoken in Jakarta, Indonesia. It is the native language of the Betawi people, who make up around 5% of the city's population. The language is also known as Jakartanese, although this name is considered pejorative by some speakers. Betawi has been heavily influenced by Javanese, Sundanese, and Malay, and is therefore not mutually intelligible with other Austronesian languages. However, it does have its own unique vocabulary and grammar. The Betawi language is endangered, as many speakers are switching to Indonesian or other languages. However, there are efforts to revive the language, including a Betawi dictionary and a Betawi-Indonesian dictionary.
