Samoan Tala

The Samoa Tala is the currency of Samoa. It is subdivided into 100 sene. The Samoa Tala is issued by the Central Bank of Samoa. In 1982, the tala was pegged to a weighted currency basket. The Samoa Tala was initially pegged to the U.S. dollar at a rate of WS$1 = US$1.4285. This peg was adjusted to WS$1 = US$1.3711 in July 1984. In September 1984, the tala was devalued to WS$1 = US$1.2969. In August 1988, the Samoa Tala was revalued to WS$1 = US$1.2069. The Samoa Tala was devalued again in July 1989 to WS$1 = US$1.1069. In October 2000, the Samoa Tala was pegged to the New Zealand dollar at a rate of WS$1 = NZ$1.9371. This peg was adjusted to WS$1 = NZ$1.7969 in May 2002. In November 2009, the Samoa Tala was devalued to WS$1 = NZ$1.4444. The Samoa Tala is currently pegged to the Australian dollar at a rate of WS$1 = AU$1.2969.
