Trinidad & Tobago Dollar

The Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TTD) is the currency of Trinidad and Tobago. It is subdivided into 100 cents. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively TT$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is one of the world's highest-valued currencies. The Trinidad and Tobago dollar is issued by the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. The bank has the sole right of issuing currency in Trinidad and Tobago. The dollar replaced the Trinidad and Tobago pound in 1964, two years after Trinidad and Tobago became independent from the United Kingdom. The Trinidad and Tobago dollar is pegged to the United States dollar at a one-to-one ratio. Both currencies are accepted interchangeably on the islands. There are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 cents, and 1 dollar. The 1 and 5 cent coins are bronze, with the other denominations in cupro-nickel. All coins feature the Trinidad and Tobago national bird, the Scarlet Ibis, on the obverse, with the words "Trinidad and Tobago" and the date. The reverse of the coins feature objects from Trinidad and Tobago's culture or natural heritage on the reverse. The 10 cent coin depicts the Magnolia grandiflora flower, the 25 cent coin a hummingbird, the 50 cent coin the Cocrico bird, and the 1 dollar coin a Scarlet Ibis. The first banknotes were issued in 1964 in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 20 dollars. In 1968, 50 and 100 dollar notes were introduced, followed by 500 and 1000 dollar notes in 1980. In 2005, a new series of notes was introduced in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars. The 5, 10, and 20 dollar notes feature the same obverse and different reverses, while the 50, 100, 500, and 1000 dollar notes have the same reverse and different obverses. All banknotes feature Trinidad and Tobago's national bird, the Scarlet Ibis, on the obverse, with the words "Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago" and the date. The reverses of the notes feature different views of Trinidad and Tobago. The 5, 10, and 20 dollar notes feature Trinidad's capital city, Port of Spain, while the 50 dollar note features the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, the 100 dollar note the Asa Wright Nature Centre, the 500 dollar note the Temple in the Sea, and the 1000 dollar note the Queen's Park Savannah.
