Syria

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, Syria is home to numerous ethnic and religious groups, including Syrian Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mandeans and Turks. Modern Syria was established in 1946 as a republic, and since then has experienced a period of instability and economic difficulties. In the Syrian Civil War, the country has been embroiled in an armed conflict since 2011, with a number of countries in the region intervening militarily on behalf of either the Syrian government or the rebel opposition.
