Mauritius, officially the Republic of Mauritius, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. The main island, from which the country takes its name, is located about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The archipelago includes the islands of Rodrigues, Agaléga and Saint Brandon. The capital and largest city is Port Louis. Mauritius is renowned for its natural beauty, with white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and lush vegetation. The island is also home to some of the world’s rarest animals, such as the dodo bird and the pink pigeon. Mauritius is a popular tourist destination, and the tourism industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy.
