Libya

Libya is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad to the south, Niger to the southwest, Algeria to the west, and Tunisia to the northwest. Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area and has the 10th largest population of any country in Africa. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica. With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometers (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the 17th largest country in the world. Libya has a long Mediterranean coastline and land borders with Tunisia to the northwest, Algeria to the west, and Niger, Chad, and Sudan to the south. The climate is mostly desert, with mild to cool winters and hot, dry summers. The country is divided into three historical regions: Tripolitania in the northwest, Cyrenaica in the east, and Fezzan in the southwest. These three regions have distinct cultures and traditions. Tripolitania is the largest and most populous region. It is home to the capital city of Tripoli and the majority of Libya’s population. The Tripolitania region is also home to the country’s largest airport, Tripoli International Airport. Cyrenaica is the second largest region and is home to the cities of Benghazi and Tobruk. Cyrenaica is also home to Libya’s second largest airport, Benina International Airport. Fezzan is the smallest and least populous region. The majority of the population in Fezzan is concentrated in the cities of Sabha and Wadi al Shatii.
