Snowball is a family of related languages for stemming of English, French, German, Dutch, Russian, Finnish, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and other languages. It has been developed by Martin Porter and is now part of the NLTK library. The original Snowball language was designed by Dr. Porter in the 1980's as a rule-based stemmer for English. Dr. Porter has also written a paper on the design of the Snowball language. The Snowball languages have been designed to follow the Porter stemming algorithm as closely as possible. They are all based on the original Snowball code base, but have been adapted to work with different languages. The Snowball languages are open source and are released under the BSD license. The Snowball languages are: - English - French - German - Dutch - Russian - Finnish - Italian - Portuguese - Spanish - Swedish - Norwegian - Danish - and other languages
