Processing is a programming language, development environment, and online community. It is used by artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. The Processing programming language was created to serve as a software sketchbook and to teach computer programming fundamentals within an arts context. The Processing environment includes a set of software tools for sketching interactive computer programs. The Processing language is based on Java, with syntax that is easy to learn for beginners and yet powerful enough for advanced users. Processing is an open source project initiated by Casey Reas and Benjamin Fry. They are both artists and designers who teach at the California Institute of the Arts. Processing is free to download and use. It is developed by a worldwide community of volunteers. Processing has been used by artists to create interactive artworks, by researchers to develop new ways of interaction, and by hobbyists to create all kinds of programs.
