COWSEL is a programming language designed for educational purposes. It was created by Dr. Richard E. Pattis in 1977 while he was a professor at the University of California, Irvine. COWSEL is based on the ALGOL programming language and includes many of the same features. However, it is much simpler and easier to learn than ALGOL. It was designed specifically for use in teaching computer science to beginners. COWSEL programs are written in a simple, English-like syntax. This makes them easy to read and understand, even for those with no previous programming experience. Despite its simplicity, COWSEL is a powerful language that can be used to write sophisticated programs. It has been used to create everything from video games to scientific simulations. COWSEL is no longer actively developed, but it remains popular among educators and students. It is a great way to learn the basics of programming and is still used in many introductory computer science courses.
