APT (A Proramming Tool) is a high-level programming language developed by Stephen Edwards and Bernard P. Zeigler at the University of Arizona in 1974. It is based on ideas from the ALGOL 68 programming language, and was designed to be both easily understandable and easily extensible. APT is a procedural programming language, meaning that programs are written as a sequence of steps to be followed. However, it also has some features of object-oriented programming languages, such as the ability to define new data types. APT programs are written in a text editor, and are then compiled into a machine-readable form. The APT compiler generates code for a virtual machine, which is then interpreted by a program called the APT Runtime System. This makes it possible to run APT programs on any computer that has the APT Runtime System installed. APT is a very powerful programming language, and is used in a wide variety of applications. For example, it is used in the development of aircraft control systems, medical imaging software, and financial trading systems.
