Mirandese

Mirandese is a Romance language spoken in northwestern Portugal, specifically in Miranda do Douro in the district of Bragança. It is co-official with Portuguese in the municipality and has been recognized as a protected language by Portuguese law since 1999. Although it is not an official language of the European Union, it is recognized by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. The language is estimated to have around 10,000 speakers, most of whom are older residents of Miranda do Douro. It is a minority language in Portugal and is considered to be endangered. The history of the Mirandese language is unclear. It is first mentioned in a document from the 9th century, but it is not certain when it began to be spoken in Miranda do Douro. It is possible that it developed from a Latin dialect spoken in the region. The language has been influenced by Portuguese, but it has also retained some features of Latin and other Romance languages. It is considered to be a bridge between Portuguese and Galician, two other Romance languages spoken in Portugal. Mirandese has its own alphabet, which is based on the Latin alphabet. It also has a unique system of accentuation, which is similar to that of Spanish. The grammar of Mirandese is similar to that of other Romance languages. However, the language has been heavily influenced by Portuguese, and as a result, it has lost some of the grammatical features that are typical of Romance languages. The vocabulary of Mirandese is also similar to that of other Romance languages. However, the language has borrowed a significant number of words from Portuguese.
