Crimean Tatar

The Crimean Tatar language is a Turkic language spoken in Crimea. It is the official language of the Crimean Tatar people, a Turkic ethnic group who are the indigenous people of Crimea. The Crimean Tatar language is also spoken by the Crimean Tatars' descendants in Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria. It is closely related to the Turkish language, with which it shares a common writing system. The Crimean Tatar language was first written in the Ottoman Turkish alphabet, which was used by the Crimean Tatars until the early 20th century. In the 1920s, the Soviet Union introduced a new Latin-based alphabet for the Crimean Tatar language. This alphabet was used until the 1930s, when the Soviet Union switched to a Cyrillic-based alphabet for all of its Turkic languages. The Crimean Tatar alphabet was changed back to Latin in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Crimean Tatar language is currently undergoing a revival, thanks to the efforts of the Crimean Tatar people to preserve their language and culture. In 2014, the Crimean Tatar language was declared an official minority language in Ukraine.
