Michif

Michif is a language spoken by the Métis people of Canada and the northern United States. It is a blend of Cree, Ojibwe, and French, with a sprinkling of other European and Aboriginal languages. The Michif language is endangered, with only a handful of fluent speakers remaining. The Michif language is unique in many ways. It is one of the few languages in the world that uses the Cree syllabics writing system. It is also one of the few languages to use both French and Cree vocabulary. The Michif language is in danger of extinction. There are estimated to be only a few hundred Michif speakers in the world. Most of them are elderly, and the language is not being passed down to the younger generation. There are efforts underway to preserve the Michif language. A dictionary and grammar have been published, and there are plans to create an online Michif course. But it will be a challenge to keep the language alive, given the small number of speakers and the lack of interest from the younger generation.
