Chagatai

Chagatai (also spelled Jagatai) is a Turkic language spoken in Central Asia. It is one of the oldest Turkic languages, dating back to the 13th century. The Chagatai alphabet is based on the Arabic script and has 28 letters. The Chagatai language is spoken in a region stretching from the Caspian Sea to China. It is the native language of the Chagatai people, a Turkic people who are ethnically and linguistically related to the Turks and Mongols. The Chagatai language has been in decline since the 18th century, when the Chagatai Khanate was conquered by the Uzbek Khanate. Today, there are only about 100,000 Chagatai speakers left in the world. Most of them live in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. The Chagatai language is endangered and is not taught in schools. However, there are efforts to revive the language, such as the Chagatai Language Academy in Uzbekistan, which offers Chagatai language courses.
