Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a landlocked country in Central America. It has coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea, in the east, and the North Pacific Ocean, in the west, and has Costa Rica to the southeast and Honduras to the northwest. Nicaragua also shares a land border with the South Pacific Ocean. With an area of 130,370 square kilometers, Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. As of 2015, the population of Nicaragua was estimated at 6.38 million. The name "Nicaragua" is derived from Nicarao, the name of the tribe that inhabited the shores of Lake Nicaragua before the Spanish conquest of the Americas in the 15th century. Nicaragua is a democratic republic. The president is both head of state and head of government. Executive power is exercised by the president and his or her cabinet, while legislative power is vested in the National Assembly. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Nicaragua's economy is primarily agricultural, with coffee, cotton, sugar, and tobacco being the main export crops. The country also exports meat, gold, and forestry products. Manufacturing is the second-largest sector of the economy, and includes the production of textiles, chemicals, and cigarettes. Tourism is also an important source of revenue, with more than 1 million visitors annually. Nicaragua is a republic with a presidential system of government. The president is both head of state and head of government, and is elected to a five-year term by popular vote. The unicameral National Assembly is the country's legislative body, and is comprised of 92 deputies elected to four-year terms. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature, and the Supreme Court is the highest court in the country. Nicaragua is a member of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the Central American Integration System, and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas.
