Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique to the west, south, and east. Its area is 118,484 square kilometers (45,747 square miles), and its estimated 2019 population was 19,091,575. The capital and largest city is Lilongwe, with a population of 1,077,116. The second largest is Blantyre, with a population of 761,973. The third largest is Mzuzu, with a population of 316,662. Malawi's history is marked by British colonial rule, which began in 1891. The country was known as Nyasaland until 1964, when it became the independent Malawi. Since independence, Malawi has been a one-party state ruled by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). In 1994, the country became a multiparty democracy. Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries. Its economy is primarily agricultural, with tobacco being the main export. Other crops include tea, sugarcane, coffee, and cotton. The country also has significant reserves of uranium. Malawi has a tropical climate with two rainy seasons. The first runs from November to April and the second from May to October. Temperatures vary depending on elevation, with the low-lying areas being the hottest. Malawi is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Southern African Development Community, and the United Nations.
