St. Martin

St. Martin is an island in the Caribbean Sea, divided between the Dutch side, Sint Maarten, and the French side, Saint-Martin. The division of the island began in 1648, when the Treaty of Concordia was signed. The treaty stated that the island would be split between the two nations, with the northern part going to the Dutch and the southern part going to the French. The island has a rich history, dating back to the days of the Arawak and Carib Indians. The Arawaks were the first to settle on the island, and they were soon followed by the Caribs. The Caribs were a warlike people and they fought fiercely against the Arawaks. Eventually, the Caribs won and the Arawaks were forced to flee the island. The Caribs ruled the island for many years, until the arrival of the Europeans. The first Europeans to set foot on the island were the Spanish. They claimed the island for Spain, but they never settled it. The next Europeans to arrive were the Dutch. They, too, claimed the island, but they also did not settle it. It wasn't until 1631 that the first European settlers arrived on the island. These settlers were the French. They established the first permanent settlement on the island and began to grow crops and raise livestock. The French and Dutch settlers often fought with each other. In 1648, the Treaty of Concordia was signed, which divided the island between the two nations. The northern part of the island went to the Dutch and the southern part went to the French. The island has been divided ever since. Each side has its own government and its own laws. However, the two sides have been able to live in peace for the most part. The island is a popular tourist destination. Its beautiful beaches and its tropical climate make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun.
