Kazakhstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, with its smaller part west of the Ural River in Eastern Europe. Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, and the ninth largest country in the world, with an area of 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,100 sq mi). Kazakhstan is the most economically advanced of the Central Asian countries. Kazakhstan is a transcontinental country. Kazakhstan has a market economy and is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The country was founded in 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan's 131 ethnicities include Kazakhs (63%), Russians (23%), Uzbeks (2.9%), Ukrainians (2.1%), Germans (1.1%), Tatars (0.8%), and other ethnic groups (7.1%). Islam is the religion of about 70% of the population, with Christianity practiced by 26%. Kazakhstan allows freedom of religion, but religious leaders must register with the government. Kazakhstan is one of the six republics of the former Soviet Union to have nuclear weapons.
