The United Arab Emirates, located in the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, is a federal state made up of seven emirates. These emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. The capital city is Abu Dhabi. The UAE covers an area of 83,600 square kilometers and has a population of over 9.5 million. Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken. Islam is the official religion, but the country is tolerant of other religions. The economy of the UAE is the second largest in the Arab world and is based on revenues from oil and gas exports, as well as tourism and other industries. The country has a high standard of living and is home to some of the tallest buildings and largest shopping malls in the world.
