SISAL is a high-level, compiled, array-oriented language designed for scientific computation. Its syntax is similar to that of FORTRAN, but it has many features not found in FORTRAN, such as user-defined types, operator overloading, and automatic memory management. SISAL was originally developed at the Center for Supercomputing Research and Development (CSRD) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The language was designed to be easy to use on a variety of computer architectures, from supercomputers to workstations. The first version of SISAL was released in 1987. The current version, SISAL 3, was released in 1996. SISAL is a free software project, and is released under the GNU General Public License.
