Pure Data (or Pd) is a visual programming language for multimedia developed by Miller Puckette in the 1990s. Pd is used for signal processing, computer music, and video synthesis. It is similar to Max/MSP, but with a more open source philosophy. Pd is written in C and runs on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It is released under the GNU Public License. Pd can be extended with external libraries written in C, C++, or Fortran. Pd-lib is a set of external libraries for Pd that are maintained by the Pd community. Pd-lib includes libraries for audio input/output, MIDI, OSC, video, and more. Pd-lib is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Pd-extended is a version of Pd that includes additional libraries not found in Pd-lib. Pd-extended is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Pd-vanilla is the basic version of Pd without any external libraries. Pd-vanilla is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. Pd-l2ork is a version of Pd designed for use with the L2Ork Linux distribution for music education. Pd-l2ork is available for Linux. Pd-ggee is a version of Pd that includes additional libraries for graphics and video. Pd-ggee is available for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
