Jovial is a high-level programming language designed for developing software systems. It was developed by the Jovial Development Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the 1970s. Jovial was designed to be easy to use and to promote good programming practices. Jovial programs are written in English, using a structured programming style. Jovial is a compiled language, and programs are typically written in a text editor such as Emacs or vi. The Jovial compiler produces machine code for a variety of architectures, including the IBM System/360, DEC VAX, and Motorola 68000. Jovial was designed to support large software projects. It has a rich set of features, including support for modular programming, data abstraction, and exception handling. Jovial also includes a powerful set of tools for debugging and testing programs. Jovial is no longer widely used, but it remains an important part of the history of programming languages.
