ALGOL 68 is a general purpose, imperative programming language that was originally developed by a team of international experts in 1968. It is one of the earliest high-level programming languages and remains in use today, though it has been largely overshadowed by more popular languages such as C and Java. ALGOL 68 has a very structured syntax that is based on the ALGOL 60 programming language. However, it also includes many features that are designed to make the language more expressive and powerful. For example, ALGOL 68 supports arbitrarily nested subroutines, which allows programmers to write very modular code. Despite its many features, ALGOL 68 has never been as popular as some of its contemporaries. Nevertheless, it remains an important part of the history of programming languages and has influenced many subsequent languages.
